Background: The adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) is a 39 amino acid polypeptide secreted by the anterior pituitary and regulates cortisol secretion from the adrenal cortex. Cortisol has a negative feedback mechanism and regulates the biosynthesis and secretion of ACTH.
